Battery-operated DTVs

Dr. D,

During and after Hurricane Ike here in Texas, we were dependent on our battery-operated televisions. Some of us didn't have power back for two weeks! Some of us still don't have cable or DirecTv back..What is going to happen to that source of information( and believe me there was a lot of needed information) in the next disaster? Will there be battery-operated digital TVs?  Will we be able to buy battery-operated converters for our current battery-operated TVs? Or are they all just going to be completely worthless?

Hi Jeanne,

Hope you are doing OK now. You and your neighbors have certainly gone through a lot.

In fact Radio Shack offers a small all-in-one 7" Accurian Brand battery powered hand held digital TV you can use to receive digital TV broadcasts when the power is out. And I understand that Winegard has developed a battery pack they’ll be offering soon for their DTV converter box so it will work on battery along with your battery operated TV - so don't throw your battery operated analog TV out! As the demand is there, there also likely will be other similar competing battery operated digital TV products available.

Also, you can get that same 7" battery digital TV under the Dynex brand at Best Buy $50 cheaper than Radio Shack.
